Out in the Open connects rural LGBTQ people to build community, visibility, knowledge and power. Their programming falls into four main categories: Movement Building, Leadership Development, Education, and Community Building. Out in the Open’s work is guided by these values: Rural can be Queer, Intersections, Celebrating Resistance, Connections, Anti-racism, and Joy. They envision a resilient community of communities that works toward the transformation of their economic, social, and political relationships. They are building a multi-issue social justice movement of rural LGBTQ people. They see building power of rural LGBTQ people across issues, identities, and generations, as a critical step in liberation for all people. These principles were developed through an intense yearlong effort by the leadership to include liberation and anti-racism explicitly in all foundational materials, because the people in GMC leadership have been working as white people for racial justice for over 10 years. They have deepened their focus on illuminating the connections among movements for racial justice and work in rural LGBTQ communities, and work with other racial justice and LGBTQ groups in the region.
